What to Put in a Love Song for Your Husband

Minkesh JainBy Minkesh JainCo-founder & Product, Melodia

A love song for your husband lands when it is specific. Not "you mean everything to me", but the nickname only you use, the way he makes tea at 6am without being asked, the year you both remember for the wrong reasons. Three details like that will do more than three verses of beautiful general feeling.

That is the whole difference between a song that could belong to anyone and one that could only belong to him, and it is why personalized romantic songs get replayed instead of politely thanked for.

Who actually orders these?

More wives than husbands, by a clear margin. Of the 84 romantic and apology song briefs written on Aamras so far, 26 named a husband as the person the song was for and 17 named a wife. The romantic song as a gift is, at least for now, something women send more often than they receive.

Worth knowing if you are a husband reading this: the song is a far less crowded gift in the other direction.

The four things worth writing down

  • The name he answers to at home. Not his full name. Twenty two of those 84 briefs carried a pet name, and it is almost always the line people react to first.
  • One ordinary day, described exactly. The hospital waiting room, the flat with no furniture, the drive back at 2am. Ordinary beats momentous, because ordinary is the part nobody else knows.
  • A thing he does, not a thing he is. "Patient" is an adjective. "Waits in the car and never once says hurry up" is a lyric.
  • What you have not said out loud. Usually the line that makes him go quiet.

The same line, three times

It helps to see what "specific" actually means in practice. Same feeling, three drafts:

  • Draft one: "You are always there for me." True of most husbands, and of several colleagues.
  • Draft two: "You are always there for me, even when you are tired." Better, still a greeting card.
  • Draft three: "You drove four hours on a work night because I said I was fine." Now it is only about him.

Notice that draft three contains no adjectives at all. It is just a fact with a time and a distance attached. That is usually what a good lyric is made of before anyone sets it to music.

Language, voice and how long it should be

Two decisions change the feel more than anything else. The first is language: use the one you speak at home, not the one you think sounds more romantic. A song in a language you only write in comes out formal, and formal is the enemy here.

The second is the voice. A male voice singing about him and a female voice singing to him are different songs from the same lyrics, and it is worth thinking about which one you want him to hear. If the song is meant to sound like you talking, the second one is usually right.

Length takes care of itself. Two to three minutes is enough for four real details, and four real details are more than most people manage.

What people leave out, and what it costs

Seventeen of the 76 romantic briefs on Aamras came in with a story under 80 characters, which is roughly one short sentence. Those songs still come out well made, but they come out interchangeable, because there was nothing in the brief that only applied to one person. The brief is not paperwork. It is the song.

If you are stuck, this helps: start from one memory rather than trying to summarise the marriage. One memory, told properly, carries the rest.

Does it have to be a slow song?

No, and most people do not want one. Across the romantic family of briefs the most requested mood is Joyful, just ahead of Sentimental and Romantic. People are not mostly asking for a ballad to cry to. They are asking for something that sounds like the relationship actually feels, which is often funny, or fond, or a little bit silly.

An anniversary is the other natural moment for this, and the reasons it works there are much the same.

Making one

You write the details, pick a language and a mood, and the song comes back ready to send. A fully personalized song built from your own story is INR 249; a NameDrop song, where his name goes into a ready made track, is INR 149. Start a romantic song when you have your four details down.

Quick questions

How long should the story be?

Three or four sentences with real specifics beats a page of general affection. Aim for details only the two of you would recognise.

Can it mix Hindi and English?

Yes, and plenty of people ask for exactly that. Of the 169 romantic, anniversary and apology briefs so far, 37 asked for Hindi and English in the same song.

What if I am not good with words?

You do not need to write lyrics. You write the facts, plainly. The lyrics are built from them.

Can I hear it before I pay?

Yes. You see the lyrics and can ask for changes before the song is made.
